Peter Van Borst
The European Horse Trainer with a Passion for Lusitanos

Peter Van Borst, who runs Interagro's headquarters - also home to Equine Training International - brings his considerable classical equitation experience to working with Lusitanos. Earlier in his career he spent years traveling worldwide, studying with High School horses and learning much from accomplished trainers throughout Europe.

Peter, and Kelli Murphey, a fellow equestrian enthusiast, pursued a dream to have their own school of classical equitation. They worked hard to achieve it and succeeded to the point where they had over ten High School stallions at their center in the United States. At that time they also brought over the most renowned names in the schooling of classical horses from Europe.

With this experience in classical equitation, Peter has often been called upon to help dressage riders on the Grand Prix circuit. From the new headquarters in Fort Worth, Peter also offers support and training to clients - post-sales support to new owners of Interagro Lusitanos, as well as owners of other breeds. And his talent does not end there….

From Europe to the USA

Peter Van Borst, half-Dutch and half-English, grew up in Ireland where he worked and competed in a variety of disciplines - eventing, dressage, jumping for example. He soon discovered he had a talent for training horses. He turned this asset into a career when at the age of 17 he began working in the film industry joining the behind the scenes horse operation and carrying out on-set stunt work in the movie The Lion in Winter. He went on to work on many more films including a string of British period dramas such as The Charge of the Light Brigade, Mary Queen of Scots and Alfred the Great.

Peter first came to America with the traveling road show 'A Company of Knights' - a spin off from the film industry in the form of a medieval stunt act. He enjoys working with live performance and commuted regularly to Las Vegas where he trained a horse to perform nightly in the world-renowned magic show of illusionists' Siegfried and Roy.

In recent years, Peter's attention has focused on the Lusitano horse. He has a long-term commitment to work with Interagro in Brazil and facilitate the placement of these carefully bred horses in specific situations. "I've been involved with horses all my life," he explained. "And you try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear in many respects in the horse business. I don't encounter that here because I have the comfort of selecting horses that are perfect for what I want."

"From my experience I realized that a horse is like a very nice wine and while you didn't have it all the time, when you had it, you really appreciated it. Now I can select from the finest - because the best trainer of horses in the world does not have the opportunity to select horses with the talent that these horses have."

Peter has already conveyed 2 Interagro horses to the U.S.A. for cutting training with the former-president of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA), Punk Carter. Before being exported to Australia, MONTEZUMA DO MIRANTE competed in dressage with Silke Rembacz – an outstanding Grand Prix rider, whom Peter has known and worked with for quite a while.

Now based at the Interagro headquarters, Peter will expand this operation and provide support to new owners of Interagro Lusitanos in the United States. "More people have become aware of these horses and I'm becoming busier to accommodate their needs," he said. "For me it is an enjoyable enterprise. It is not just working with Lusitanos, which is something that gives me great pleasure, but seeing people who may have known little about Lusitanos, realize the amazing talent and scope of these horses and get real pleasure from riding and working with them."
